It is Operated and owned by MGM Resorts Int. Excalibur is named for the magical sword given to King Arthur,Excalibur Hotel & Fokus777. Articles and the resort uses the Medieval legend in every way possible. The face and front are styled after a mid evil castle. Up to 2007, a wizard styled character representing Merlin the magician was used, and looked out from a tall vantage point. It has then since been replaced by a character advertising Dick’s Last Resort.
Excalibur is located at the intersection Las Vegas Boulevard and Tropicana. pedestrian bridges connect the location to neighboring casinos. At the north end it is connected to New York New York, and to the east it is connected to Tropicana. The trams are free that connect Excalibur to the other MGM Resorts properties at the south, namely Mandalay bay and luxor.
The location at which the Excalibur resides was originally to be the site of Xanadu Resort envisioned way back in 1975. The 1,730 room tropical paradise themed resort was to have been the first gigantic resort at Las Vegas. The enormous project never was built because the developers could not secure proper zoning with the county on the sewer structures needed for such a large undertaking.
Excalibur is modeled after the theme resort strategy made popular among casino hotel operators of the 1990s which includes the Las Vegas gambling experience combined with all of the family oriented elements as well. Then since 2006 many of the medieval themed items and props have been removed because of a four to five year renovation plan and modernization project. As of 2010, only a few of the wall murals remain, as Excalibur was updated to be much more modern and use much more understated elements than before, including contemporary art works with furniture and flat screen televisions in 2,000 of the freshly renovated hotel rooms.The 100,000 square foot gambling casino now consists of both table games and over 1,200 machines. In addition to casino space, the resort includes a newly renovated swimming pool area, a 13,000-square foot spa and fitness area, eight restaurants, a fantastic food court, and of course the Chapel at Excalibur.
The hotel is the regular home to three shows, Thunder down under, The bee gees show, and the famous Tournament of Kings. Thunder From Down Under did move to the hotel during July 2001 and is considered to be one of the best all male strip shows in Las Vegas. In 2006, room of the show was renamed the Thunder From Down Under Showroom in honoring the show.
